Description:
  • Lucerne also known as "Alfalfa" or "Rijka" in northern India and "Methi Ghas" in Maharashtra is a protein-rich fodder and considered as "QUEEN OF FODDER CROP".
  • It is a perennial plant and can supply fodder for 3-4 years in the same growing.
  • Along with protein, it is also a major source of minerals and calcium.
  • It is a palatable green fodder containing 16-25% of crude protein and 20-30% of fibre. I
  • It is a hardy leguminous crop and It can be easily converted into silage and hay.
  • It is a winter season crop and is mainly cultivated in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
 
Land Preparation:
  1. Plough 2-3 times with an iron plough to obtain good tilth, Apply and spread 12-15 tons/acre. Prepared field thoroughly and prepared levelled seedbed. Ploughland once with help of disk plough and three times with cultivator. After every ploughing does planking to make the seed bed levelled.
  2. Apply NPK fertilizer as per soil test recommendations as far as possible. If the soil testing is not done, follow the blanket recommendations of 25;40;20 kg NPK/ha. Apply a full dose of NPK basally before sowing
 
Sowing:
  • Seed Rate: 1 Kg seeds use for 3-4 guntha (3000-4000 square feet) for 1 acre 10-12 kgs seeds are required
  • Time of sowing:
    The best time for lucerne sowing is from October to February
  • Sowing Depth:
    sow seeds at depth of 2-4 cm in the soil.
  • Method of sowing:
    For Sowing broadcasting method is used. Avoid waterlogged, alkaline and heavy soils for its cultivation
 
Weed Control:
To keep the field weed-free, carry out the first hoeing one month after sowing. In the rainy season, weed infestation is high at that time take hoeing operations according to weed intensity.
 
Water Management / Irrigation:
Irrigate immediately after sowing and life irrigation on the 3rd day. Then once in 10 days depending on soil type. No irrigation is needed during the rainy season. (Irrigation depends on soil water holding ability)
 
Care Instruction / Plant Protection: 
1) Alfalfa Aphid: Serious pest of lucerne crop. If infestation is observed, to control take a spray of Malathion 50EC@350ml in 150 litre of water per acre.
2) Lucerne caterpillar, jassid and weevil: If infestation is observed, take spray of Hexavin 50WP@450gm or Malathion 50EC@ 400ml in 150 Ltr of water per acre.
3) Rust: If not controlled timely can reduce yield severely. Small brown spots are observed on leaves with a black or brown colour at the centre. If infestation is observed, take a spray of Mancozeb (Dithane M-45)@25gm/10 Ltr of water.
4) Leaf spot: It is mostly found in the north and central India. Affected plant turn yellow and leaves gets dropped off. If infestation is observed, take a spray of Mancozeb (Dithane M-45) or  Chlorothalonil@300 gm/150 Ltr of water.
 
Harvesting:
First, cut on the 45-50th day after sowing at 50cm height (approximately) and subsequent cuts at intervals of 25-30 days at the same height.
 
Fodder Yield:
In one season 7 to 8 cutting can be taken with an average fodder yield of 280 to 320 qtl/acre.
